Biological Water Quality Assessment
The EPA Quality Rating (Q-value) System has been used to monitor the ecological quality of streams and rivers in Ireland since 1971. This Q-index is a quality measurement ranging from Q1 - Q5 with Q1 representing the poorest quality and Q5 signifying unpolluted / 'high' water quality status sites. These assessments are undertaken using benthic macroinvertebrates as bioindicators. Macroinvertebrates are regarded as an excellent tool for water quality assessment as they exhibit differential responses to physical and chemical changes in their environment.
Hydrec Environmental Consulting are experienced in conducting freshwater macroinvertebrate sampling in habitats such as rivers, streams and lakes. This sampling is commonly carried out as part of Appropriate Assessment, Environmental Impact Assessment Reporting and Integrated Catchment Management projects.

In addition, Patrick McCabe of Hydrec Environmental Consulting, is an EPA-registered Small Streams Risk Score (SSRS) assessor. The SSRS is a biological risk assessment system used for identifying rivers that are definitely ‘at risk’ of failing to achieve the ‘good’ water quality status goals of the Water Framework Directive (WFD). One application of the tool is its use in determining waste water treatment plant (WWTP) compliance.
